I have used the services of John Greiner to create a custom Excel Add-In. Previously to the Add-In, we were manually making changes to every spreadsheet, which could take from 30 minutes to two hours. It also left a large margin open for errors, which could cost several thousand for just one typo, and lost time / resources.

John created the Add-In, which, with the click of a button and one second later, processed the entire spreadsheet. I was impressed with the turnaround for the Add-In, less than half a day. He was patient to work with me to ensure it was working 100% correctly. We have enlisted John as the top resource for any future spreadsheet macros and Add-Ins and I would highly recommend him for your needs.

In the few days we started using this feature we have processed several spreadsheets and have saved approximately six hours of manual edits in the first week alone.

As a clinical cytogenetic director in the fast moving field of genetics, we are constantly working to customize our computer networks to ensure accuracy, efficiency and reliability. In the past few years we have moved into the world of high through-put bioinformatics and have needed to reach outside our own homegrown workforce to enable us to utilize more sophisticated tools. One consultant we have been working with this past year stands heads above others, and that is John Greiner. His job assignment was to generate a MACRO that would interface with the Agilent genomic microarray system and our own analytical tools. In simple terms, following scanning of the microarray chip and computational analysis, the MACRO is to process the microarray data into discrete patient data files ready for analysis and interpretation. John worked jointly with us (a team of co-directors and supervisors) and Agilent to produce an amazing tool that went beyond our expectations.

I would expect many people in the bay area to have the expertise to design and generate a MACRO for our purpose. But John has additional abilities that make him unique in the field of computer consultants, the ability to hear MANY people’s version of their expectations for a project, sort through these QUICKLY, and provide a testable product in a VERY timely manner that is easy to dissect and fine tune until you reach your final version. He communicated with all parties clearly by generating a list of tasks and a reliable timetable, which became a benchmark for all of his work.

In demanding situations, John is able to guide the users to find the critical area that needs to be further reviewed. He does NOT assume he knows what the other party is talking about, he verifies by working with us in a very timely and efficient way. He seems to diffuse the tension in an otherwise stressful situation. He also educates us in the process.

Case in point, we chose to upgrade the MACRO recently, and in doing so, John taught us about critical features in the Agilent system that we were unaware existed. This surprised us, since we have been working with this system for more than 3 years and John less than a few months! John did this, as he always does, via live web interfacing, and calmly guiding us through features of the MACRO design. In a clinical setting, when a MACRO is part of a process that results in patient diagnosis, there is a lengthy and thorough validation process that must be satisfied prior to using the MACRO on patient samples. These validation processes all went very smoothly, speaking to the workmanship of the MACRO, and John’s ability to design, implement, and update MACROs in intense clinical settings.

His computer expertise together with his exceptional teaching skills and focused yet calm approach is a perfect combination, and one I think we all should strive for in our careers.

I have been a CPA for approximately 25 years. With the constant deadlines and additional forms mandated by the Internal Revenue Service, I had to find a way to become more productive.
